Grand Street Gives Back

The Grand Street neighborhood is giving back to our community! The Grand Street BID is hosting our 5th annual Grand Street Holiday Food Drive. 15 small businesses will host collection boxes for non-perishable food items to be shared with neighbors in need. We’re excited to work in partnership with North Brooklyn Mutual Aid to collect items and distribute them to community food access points in our greater North Brooklyn community, as well as to specific food giveaway events.

To donate, just stop by any of our participating businesses and drop the food items in the holiday wrapped collection box. That’s it! Use the list below to pick out groceries. Don’t forget to shop locally for your food donations. You can even shop for items at a participant like Bravo Supermarket (785 Grand Street) to check out and donate in one trip. In past years the food drive was a great success, with collections between 800lbs-900lbs of food per year.

Items that are especially helpful are as follows: peanut butter, breakfast cereals, oatmeal, canned vegetables, canned soups, pasta, rice, canned beans, canned fish, baby formula + food, granola bars, raisins, and dried fruit.

You can drop off food at the following participating businesses:

Laundry Taxi - 578 Grand Street

Blinky’s Bar - 609 Grand Street

Both of our organizations have a deep commitment to our community, making them an ideal partner for this year’s food drive.”

North Brooklyn Mutual Aid is a collective of neighbors helping neighbors that formed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Shana Kimball, a coordinator from North Brooklyn Mutual Aid says, “We are happy to help distribute the collections from the 5th Annual Grand Street Holiday Food Drive across the neighborhood with thanks to the Grand Street BID and local business involved for their coordination, and for all of the neighbors participating.” Over the past two years, North Brooklyn Mutual Aid has continued to expand its essential grocery support through deliveries, community fridges, and gift card programs, as well as launching community initiatives, including the distribution of harm reduction supplies and hygiene items; housing defense and homeless outreach; and composting and open spaces/streets stewardship.

Grand Street Celebrates Small Business Saturday!

It’s that time of year again! The Grand Street BID is gearing up for Small Business Saturday. The nationwide annual event is this Saturday, November 27th. We can’t wait to celebrate all of the small businesses on Grand Street by encouraging locals and visitors to support their neighborhood favorites, and invest in our community.

In an early start to Small Business Saturday, we set up a table outside one of our newest Businesses, Strutting Mutts. We handed out some treats and coffee, and got to meet and talk with our neighbors. Thanks to everyone who stopped to chat and learn more about supporting the small business community on Grand Street, it was a great success!

Small businesses have fueled Grand Street for over 100 years and continue to be the cornerstones of our vibrant district. Executive Director of the BID, Erin Piscopink says “After a hard two years, people are excited to shop locally. Dollars spent at a small business go a long way toward helping our community bounce back stronger than before.” This Saturday, be sure to Shop Small on Grand Street. Tag @GrandStreetBID and use #shopsmall to show us how you celebrated our small businesses this weekend!

Grand Street Businesses Work to Reduce Food Waste

Too Good To Go, a food waste prevention app is making waves across New York City and Grand Street businesses are getting in on the action. We’re proud to say there are currently six businesses in the Grand Street BID that are participating in the organization’s broad-reaching initiative to end food waste. Look out for Ozzie’s Fresh Market, Mercadito by Eleva and Portenas, Los Primos, Grand Morelos, Rome to Brooklyn, and Taste of Jerusalem. They’re using the Too Good to Go App to distribute their leftover food that would otherwise be thrown out, at a discounted price. Our businesses have joined over 75,000 others who partner with Too Good to Go to help achieve their mission.

You can support the participating Grand Street businesses by downloading the app and purchasing the surplus food they are offering. Get in on the action, and prevent food waste at the same time. Food products distributed are usually a miscellaneous assortment of the daily surplus and changes daily. As the app increases in popularity, we hope to see more restaurants and neighbors in our district and the surrounding neighborhood joining in.

Financial Assistance Available to Our Small Businesses

As we are still living in a world impacted by Covid-19, it’s been challenging for businesses to continue to fully recover. Below are a selection of federal and local financial resources that provide assistance to businesses impacted by the pandemic. Learn more through the links below to find out if any of these programs are a good fit!

Financial Assistance for Businesses:

  • New York State COVID-19 Pandemic Small Business Recovery Grant Program

This program provides grant assistance to currently viable small businesses, micro-businesses and for-profit independent arts and cultural organizations in the State of New York who have experienced economic hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the amount of a business’s annual gross receipts for 2019, awards will range from $5,000, $10,000 and $20,000.

  • Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL)

    EIDL provides two options:

    1. Covid-19 EIDL is a Federal small business loan program supports small businesses’ recovery from the COVID-19 disaster’s economic impacts by providing accessible and borrower-friendly capital

    2. EIDL Advanced Program is for the hardest hit businesses and allows eligible applicants of the original EIDL to receive up to $15,000 in funding from SBA that does not need to be repaid. These "advances" are similar to a grant, but without the typical requirements that come with a U.S. government grant.

  • NYS Restaurant Return-to-Work Tax Credit

The $35 million Restaurant Return-to-Work Tax Credit Program provides an incentive to COVID-impacted restaurants to bring restaurant staff back-to-work, and to increase hiring at NYS restaurants. Qualifying businesses are eligible for a tax credit of $5,000 per new worker hired, up-to $50,000 per business.

  • Employee Retention Tax Credit

The Employee Retention Credit is a refundable tax credit against certain employment taxes equal to 50% of the qualified wages an eligible employer pays to employees after March 12, 2020, and before January 1, 2021. Eligible employers can get immediate access to the credit by reducing employment tax deposits they are otherwise required to make. Also, if the employer's employment tax deposits are not sufficient to cover the credit, the employer may get an advance payment from the IRS.

  • SBA PPP Direct Forgiveness Portal

For PPP Loans of less than $150,000, SBA has created a portal to streamline forgiveness processing for PPP borrowers. After registration, you may use this streamlined process to automatically submit your forgiveness request to your lender.

The Grand Street BID continues to partner with Start Small Think Big, a registered non-profit, to offer significant free legal, financial, and marketing assistance to Grand Street businesses. Please take advantage of this free legal service to help navigate any of these financial aid processes.

Calling Mentors! iMentor Student Program at Lyons Community School

We have an amazing opportunity for our community to volunteer and support local youth in East Williamsburg! The BID recently connected with iMentor to learn about a program that works with local students from the Lyons Community School located on the campus at 223 Graham Ave, and thought our super awesome, caring community might be interested in participating. iMentor is an education non-profit and youth mentoring program that works to empower first-generation college students to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions through one-on-one mentorships.

A majority of iMentor’s students identify as people of color, are international students, or speak languages other than English. When students meet their mentors, it is important that they see successful working professionals who are as diverse and unique as they are. While we almost have enough women to support our female-identifying students for this school year, iMentor still needs more than 350+ male mentors, particularly men of color, to work with our male students.

Mentor Requirements:

  • Have a 2 or 4 year college degree

  • Mentors commit to 3-5 hours per month (1x per week write your mentee, 1x per month meet your mentee at an event, periodic college & Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion trainings)

  • Be willing to be fingerprinted by the NYC Department of Education in-person (downtown Brooklyn)

  • All NYC-based mentors who enter our program this fall will have the option to remain fully virtual throughout the duration of their 4-year match!

What Makes a Good Mentor?

  • Curiosity about your mentee’s life & interests

  • Flexibility & openness

  • Consistency in the highs and lows of the mentorship

Are you or someone you know in our community a good fit for the mentorship program? If you would like to start volunteering to mentor a student through iMentor click here. If you are interested in learning more about the program or have any questions, please reach out to Rachel Hutt at rhutt@imentor.org

Alex and two of his clients!

The Brooklyn Pawffice is officially open! We’re so happy to welcome our newest Dog Care center to the neighborhood. Owner, Alex Romero is a life long dog owner, and has been caring for dogs around the city for about three years. He decided to take the plunge and open his own space to provide dogs with an optimal space to spend their days, “Whether that be playing, swimming, relaxing, or running around in a big open space.” - Alex Romero

Alex was excited about the central location and large floorplan of the storefront at 522 Grand Street, and you can tell that he put his all into this fantastic space. Designed and painted by Alex himself, the Pawffice has a spacious interior and equally as spacious backyard, giving the dogs plenty of room for dogs to move around and run freely. This colorful and welcoming facility is the perfect place for your pup, day and night! Stop by with your dog to say hello, and see this wonderful dog oasis for yourself.

Philomena's Bar Opens at 790 Grand Street

The Philomena Cocktail

The Philomena Cocktail

Philomena’s is Grand Street’s newest bar! The beautifully remodeled space is welcoming the community with open arms to try their featured infused ice cube cocktails. Owned and run by brothers Kyle and Sean O’Brien of Den Hospitality, and third partner Kyle Dailies — who is the master behind the cocktails and infused ice creations — Philomena’s has already made quite a name for itself. The bar has been mentioned in The Infatuation, Time Out, and Gotham Mag, and various food and travel social media accounts.

Signatures cocktails with infused ice include The Philomena (Prosecco with a watermelon and rose cube) and the Aileen (tequila blanco, guava, lime contrieu, and a habanero cube). These along with the rest of the drink selection are almost as gorgeous as the interior of the bar itself. Brown leather booths and deep powder blue walls create a cozy and tasteful atmosphere.

And if you’re hungry, they’re also serving up small bites from our neighbors at Pomp and Circumstance, a local, family run restaurant known for their pitas, dips, and elevated Mediterranean fusion cuisine.

Stop by any day after 5pm to check out this cool and creative cocktail bar on Grand Street!

Mainstay Must Experiences

BAHIA RESTAURANT—$25

690 Grand Street — menu

It all starts with pupusas. If you’ve never had one, Bahia owners Luis and Felix say to think of them as like the “tacos of El Salvador”. The prix fixe menu at Bahia starts with 2 pupusas of your choice, a salad, or tamal de pollo. We, of course, recommend some of the best pupusas in NYC. Plenty of options for dinner, but our favorite is the Carne Asada: grilled boneless choice shell steak. You get two sides with the entree of your choice from a few options like mixed vegetables, rice, and roasted potatoes. Flan is for dessert and your meal is paired with a glass of delicious red or white sangria.

A hometown favorite, Bahia has been a dedicated community member of Grand Street for 20 years. In 2019, the restaurant doubled down on their dedication to the neighborhood with a complete interior and exterior renovation in order to stay ahead in a changing Williamsburg market. It’s not just about looks though, Bahia is confident that once you’ve had their pupusas and try a glass of their homemade sangria you are certain to return for more. Photo at top of article.

Dont miss these Pupusas from Bahia!

GRAND MORELOS—$23

727 Grand Street — menu

Another Grand Street staple, Grand Morelos has been with the neighborhood day and night for decades—literally. The 24/7 diner & bakery has seen us all at our finest and not-so-fine hours. The Grand Morelos bakery is also one of the better kept secrets of our food scene, so take advantage. Guacamole is our go-to appetizer, but we also recommend the cheese quesadillas if you’re extra hungry. Hanger steak fajitas for your entree will fill you if the app didn’t, but try to save room for the Oreo cheesecake. Impossible chocoflan and tres leches cakes are your other options for Restaurant Week dessert. Once you’ve fallen in love with Grand Morelos stop back in for affordable cookies & doughnuts from the bakery and amazing iced coffee (not just by diner standards) any time you want - literally.

Don’t miss out on this highly commended restaurant, with reviews claiming they have one of the best burgers in NYC.

Featured Outdoor Dining

AMMAZZACAFFÈ—$35

702 Grand Street — menu

House pork ragu with reginette at Ammazzacaffe

House pork ragu with reginette at Ammazzacaffe

Take advantage of the warm weather by dining in Ammazzacaffe’s gorgeous backyard. Winner of last year’s coveted Bib Gourmand title from Micheline Guide, Ammazzacaffè has already built its reputation for affordable fine dining at its best. Be sure to try the Tartare crostino with sea trout, Lettuga salad with Botarga, and sunchokes as an appetizers. For your entree, try the Gemelli Verde—pasta with with mushrooms and spinach — it’s the perfect fresh summer dish. Finish the night with buttermilk pannacotta with cherry and hazelnut for the perfect date or special night out on Grand Street.

If the food isn’t enough, visiting Ammazza offers a bit of historical experience. Their location at 702 Grand Street was the childhood home of Betty Smith, inspiring her classic A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. RSVP.

TACO EDITION—$23

800 Grand Street — menu

A longtime participant in Restaurant Week, Taco Edition is back with a new menu and a new backyard! Be sure to check out their new outdoor dining area with a great ambiance and secret garden vibes. Even though the service is fast and the environment is seat yourself-casual, during Restaurant Week you’ll get a lot more than a 5 minute snack. For their updated summer specials, start with the Elote, move on to the Enchiladas, and accompany it with a refreshing frozen mango and passion fruit granita. Grab a bite and enjoy this beautiful hidden outdoor experience on Grand.

Crispy Duck at Thip Osha

This cozy Thai spot nearby the Grand Street L station, has a beautiful and shaded sidewalk patio to enjoy your meal this summer. With a diverse prix fixe menu, Thip Osha has altogether exactly 50 combinations to choose from. There is surely something that will please everyone from curry to noodles to fried rice. Out of all of those choices, our favorites are the crispy chicken wings with red chili sauce to start, roasted duck noodle soup, and banana sticky rice for dessert. Stop by this tiny spot for big flavors, and a lovely outdoor dining experience.

LOS TACOS-MCONDO—$29

502 Grand Street — menu

Colorful outdoor vibes at Los Tacos

Colorful outdoor vibes at Los Tacos

The chic corner bar and taqueria is a cool spot for late night dinners, dates, and eats after a night out. This past year they created a cool and shady outdoor dining area along the sidewalk on Union Ave. Enjoy Mexican classics at one of their outdoor tables or open air dining space at one of the most high quality late night restaurants in Brooklyn. The nachos are absolute standouts at Los Tacos, and you can choose them either as a starter (mini nachos) or as an entree. We recommend at least one of those in your mix. The queso fundido is also very good, but if you’re limiting carbs you can choose the Mexican steak to go with the nachos. Churros with fruit are for dessert, with mango and chili powder as the primary flavors. Note that Los Tacos is cash only.

CARNEVAL—$35

507 Grand Street — menu

Signature Brazilian cocktails from Carneval

Signature Brazilian cocktails from Carneval

Carneval opened exactly two years ago in August, featuring specialty cocktails and Latin-inspired cuisine. Owner Mike Cruz grew up just blocks from the restaurant and has created a go-to spot for Williamsburg natives and newcomers alike. He has transformed the space to include a large backyard patio perfect for enjoying music and snacks. Carneval has a variety of tasty appetizers, savory entrees and awesome frozen drinks to enjoy during the hot weather. This year’s menu features a lemon fish fillet and romano chicken not normally seen on the menu, so we suggest checking out these special dishes! Escape the busy street and enjoy Restaurant Week with Carneval, where it’s always a celebration.

Filling Favorites!

THE SANDWICH SHOP—$20.75

658 Grand Street — menu

The cozy lunch and dinner spot is back again for Restaurant Week with high-quality deli style sandwiches, salads and bowls. A Grand Street staple since 2013, the Sandwich Shop is the perfect place to grab a refreshing, and filling meal. Emiliana Sandwich and Chips from The Sandwich Shop

Emiliana Sandwich and Chips from The Sandwich Shop

Valued members of the community, the Shop has collected and donated over 200 lbs of food in our annual Holiday Food Drives. You can also find The Sandwich Shop in the Wall Street Journal from our previous Restaurant Weeks. All sandwiches, bowls, and wraps are available—but the best bang for your buck is the Full sized Emiliana to go along with the combo of a beer and bag of chips.

RYUJIN—$25

513 Grand Street — menu

Ryujin Ramen

Ryujin Ramen

Something about the ramen from Ryujin leaves us stuffed after every bowl. Now add an appetizer and dessert to the mix to really make the most of a 3 course dinner. Keep it light with your app so go with the steamed pork bun or the fried shishito peppers. You can choose from 8 different options of ramen bowl, but our favorite is the spicy miso bowl. Finally, the meal is paired with either beer, sake, or ice cream. The jury is out here so we’ll leave that choice to you.

MAD FOR CHICKEN—$25

617 Grand Street — menu

Signature Wings from Mad For Chicken Williamsburg

Signature Wings from Mad For Chicken Williamsburg

Boneless or bone-in? Luckily both genres of wing are on the menu. The chicken at MFC is shipped in daily from a farm in Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania and the wings are coated with a unique sauce of soy, garlic, and various fruits. On the appetizer menu, the standouts are the small crab salad or the truffle/ Parmesan fries. We recommend the 10pc wings (with or without bones—your choice) for entree, but kimchi fried rice and bulgogi over rice are available for non-wing lovers. For a drink you can choose between any draft beer, a glass of sangria, or a soda on the house.

Strutting Mutts Opens at 624 Grand Street

Owner, Paul Minigiello

Owner, Paul Minigiello

The storefront at 624 Grand Street has been pet and dog oriented for quite some time. So, when the space recently opened up for rental, long time dog care professional Paul Minigiello felt it was a “no brainer” and jumped on renting the space for Strutting Mutts. A local resident, Paul and his partner co-run he business, and have been walking and boarding dogs for the North Brooklyn Community for over seven years. He’s excited to now take his business to the next level with a dedicated commercial space.

Walking down Grand, one can’t hep but notice Strutting Mutts’ new bright blue and pink facade. Behind the cheery exterior, the dog care facility offers daycare and boarding, with plans to expand their walking services. At some point they hope to add a groomer to their team as well!

We are excited to welcome the Strutting Mutts family to Grand Street! Be sure to stop by for all your dog care needs, we’re confident your pets will be in good hands.

Grand Street Cleanup Day!

It’s time for some Spring cleaning on Grand Street! Join us on Saturday May 15th from 11AM-1PM for the Grand Street Cleanup Day and E-Waste Recycling Event. We will be meeting at the corner of Manhattan Avenue and Grand Street, with coffee and a free T-shirt for the first 30 volunteers to arrive!

Our plan is to start at opposite ends of the district, Bushwick Ave and Union Ave, and have each group clean towards each other until they meet in the middle. Some of the target areas we’re working on are trash pickup, tree pit trash removal, cleaning our tree guards and any other tasks that may come up. All cleanup supplies will be provided.

For E-Waste recycling, please stop by between 11AM-1PM to drop off any small and medium size electronic waste items. If you are planning to dispose of large electronic equipment please email us at info@grandstreetbk.org to arrange a time to drop it off at our office.

Come out, volunteer, clean, green, and get to know you’re neighbors! We’re so excited to see you all out there, and to get things on Grand in tip-top shape.

Adopt-A-Tree Returns to Grand Street!

Two of last year’s awesome volunteers!

Two of last year’s awesome volunteers!

After last year’s success of Adopt-A-Tree on Grand Street, we are excited to announce the return of our awesome volunteer-based, tree stewardship program. This year, we are back and better than ever with some upgrades to the program. With many neighbors expressing interest in adopting a tree, we are adding some new workshops, and guidelines to help us expand our volunteer programming and network.

In addition to weekly waterings, participants will be asked to attend three brief workshops hosted by the BID, in May, July, and October. At each workshop you will learn about the pits, be given tips on what you can do to best care for them, and receive materials and goodies to help you along the way.

Please fill out this form to participate. We are so excited to welcome all of our new participants and to reconnect with our previous volunteers! Pit assignment will be first come first serve, and we will be giving priority of tree pit locations to our returning volunteers.

There are over 85 tree pits in our district (on just 6 blocks!)—and the process of planting perennials has been years in the making. It started three years ago and with received funding from Borough President Eric Adams Council Member Antonio Reynoso, the BID has been able to place tree guards in our previously unprotected tree pits. With each new tree guard installed, the BID is able to team with The Horticultural Society of New York to plant perennials native to Brooklyn.

Our collection of Brooklyn-native perennials includes “Purple Tears” switchgrass and “Wood’s Blue” asters. These choices were intentional to bring Brooklyn wildflowers back to our streetscape, but even as native flowers it can be difficult to survive the city summer. Sidewalk heat, pollution, litter, and our beloved neighborhood dogs misusing the pits can inhibit growth and require plantings to be tended with extra care.

Our trees do tremendous work in combating some of the above factors—the trees within the Grand Street BID district alone save the City over $5000 a year draining water, removing smog, and conserving energy. Pin Oaks, Japanese Zelkovas, Kentucky Coffeetrees, and Swamp White Oaks all find a home on Grand Street—and many of our trees are young and newly planted. Similar to our perennials, it can be difficult for a young tree to make it on a city commercial corridor.

Adopt-A-Tree Today! Help us steward our awesome trees, meet our neighbors, and beautify our community. We look forward to the coming months with you all!

Taste of Jerusalem Opens at 812 Grand Street

Grand Street BID welcomes it’s newest restaurant, Taste of Jerusalem to 812 Grand Street! Owner, Monir Naji is an East Jerusalem native, bringing years of experience in the cuisine and restaurant industry of his city to all of us in Brooklyn. Monir previously worked in construction, and transitioned back to the food industry when the opportunity to open his own restaurant arose. The space at 812 Grand has been in limbo for a few years, and the ultimate decision to close allowed Monir to snag this awesome storefront. His passion for food led him through his career transition, and is seen in the fresh and flavorful dishes he serves.

The space may be small but is packed with warmth and the smell of fresh Israeli cuisine. An open counter setup provides a welcoming atmosphere and allows customers to choose toppings and chat as they select their dishes. Not to mention the fresh shawarma and rotisserie chickens rotating on a spit in the background, and the extra large, freshly fried homemade falafel. Monir takes pride in the freshness of his food, which is all Hallal! In addition to platters and sandwiches, there is an assortment of fresh baked goods including baklava, spinach and cheese pies, mamoul, and rice pudding.

If you get the chance, be sure to stop by Taste of Jerusalem and try some of Monir’s incredible food, we’re pretty sure you’ll get hooked!

Small Business Wonder Women

March is Women’s History Month! Nearly 30 business improvement districts (BIDs), neighborhood associations and merchants’ groups from New York City’s five boroughs are coming together this month to honor Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day. The focus is women-owned small businesses in the city, which have been particularly hard hit during the pandemic.

The Grand Street BID is excited to participate in this celebration of women owned and led businesses. Throughout the month we will be featuring these amazing women on our Instagram using #smallbusinesswonderwomen. Each post will highlight the women and their teams, and give some background story and a quote about their experiences as business owners and leaders. Keep an eye out on our social to learn more about these strong leaders within our community.

Alita Cafe Opens at 797 Grand Street

Grand Street’s newest coffee shop is now open! We’re excited to welcome Alita Cafe, which may be be small in size, but has no shortage of good coffee, good food, and good friends. Partners, Alejandro Ceballos and Paolo Maliksi are native New Yorkers who met in music school. Many years later the two friends have transitioned from music to coffee. Paolo owns Regalia, a small roasting company in long Island City, and wanted to find a space to serve his own coffee, along with baked goods and sandwiches. Hence, Alita was born.

Homemade Biscuits!

The partners are excited to start serving the community, aiming to satisfy the idea that “people are always seeking comfort.” Reflected in the cozy interior, homemade menu, and even the name, which is short for Abuelita (Grandmother in Spanish), the Cafe achieves the perfect atmosphere for those seeking warmth. Especially in lieu of this challenging year.

Storefront locations on Grand Street stood out to Alejandro and Paolo as they saw other coffee shops on the corridor attracting a lot of business, and creating a sense of community. The space’s previous tenant, Lula Bean, was included in that observation. Return of another Cafe in Lula Bean’s place is filling a void felt by locals after their closure.

Alita’s in-house menu is filled with sweet and savory, pastries, cakes, and their famous biscuits! As the Cafe continues to get up and running they will be adding more items to the menu, including focaccia sandwiches. Stop by to try some of these delicious treats and local brewed coffee. A warm welcome and good neighbors will be waiting to greet you.
